Originally recorded over a single weekend in December 1988 and released in 1989 on Metalcore Records, San Francisco thrashers Epidemic’s “The Truth of What Will Be” – nine tracks in under 23 minutes, yet dense with ideas, attitude, and sheer sonic violence – never reached the audience it deserved due to weak distribution. What it did do was establish the band firmly within the Bay Area scene: “We were jumping in the pit along with so many other bands,” singer Carl Fulli recalls. “We got to play with Testament, D.R.I., Exodus and Slayer all within the next year – it jump-started us.”
Epidemic carved out a sound entirely their own: the raw ferocity of Slayer’s “Reign in Blood” colliding with the punk-infused chaos of Nuclear Assault and S.O.D., anchored by Mark Bodine’s thundering distorted bass and propelled by Fulli’s uniquely venomous vocals. The raw, organic production is inseparable from the record’s character.
“It’s not an injustice at all,” Fulli concludes, referring to the fact that the band never broke through. “I am grateful for what we had, what we did, and that people still care enough about it that there’s still interest in Epidemic today.” High Roller Records’ remastered reissue gives a new generation the chance to find out why they should.
